Even though he was in one of the biggest bands of all time, Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek says he never considered himself a rock star. He said in an April 2010 interview his heart was pumping the same energy as anyone else and "If you do think of yourself as a rock star, then you're a fool."
Manzarek died yesterday of bile duct cancer in Rosenheim, Germany. He was 74.
Manzarek said The Doors came together quickly after they met at a Transcendental Meditation event because he and Jim Morrison knew each other and guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore knew each other.
Because The Doors didn't have a bass player, Manzarek played the bass parts on a second keyboard.
Densmore says he felt totally in sync with Manzarek musically, like they were of one mind. He says they held down the foundation for Krieger and Morrison to float on and he will miss his "musical brother."
